Buizin vats hike

Description

A natural curiosity of Ain, in the heart of Bugey, the Buizin vats are more or less deep pots. On the trail, a series of waterfalls makes this hike in the undergrowth pleasant. To be done in mid-season to take advantage of the water basins.

A hike almost entirely in the undergrowth, ideal for the spring and autumn periods. A perfect trail to enjoy the coolness of the forest, wild flowers along the way and especially a walk along the water. Beautiful light, pretty landscapes pierced through the foliage and above all perfect tranquillity. Only the birds and the breeze will accompany you to the tanks and their waterfall...

A rather easy walk, although some steep slopes and river crossings. Ideal to enjoy it with friends without very young children and hikers in good physical shape.

On the way back, a gourmet break is a must in the village of Vaux-en-Bugey to taste the wines made on site.

Tips and Suggestions

Nearby, the Buizin trail from Vaux-en-Bugey to Saint-Denis-en-Bugey is a walking route along the stream for 8km. Family walk to be done in part or in full.

In the town of Vaux en Bugey, two winegrowers welcome you to taste their wine, produced from vines on the hills surrounding the village.

Topo / step by step

Departure can be from Vaux en Bugey (parking near the village hall) or from Vaux Fevroux (hamlet 2 km from Vaux, a few parking spaces at the wash house). Follow yellow markings.

From Vaux-en-Bugey, head south (rue des cattes), then left onto route de Lagnieu (D60a). Turn right onto “chemin des Gorelles”, take the path which goes straight between the houses and stay on the main path until Vaux-Févroux.

From Vaux Fevroux, almost at the exit of the hamlet, direction Cleyzieu, on the D60a, take a path to the right which goes up into the forest (sign for source captured - rue Paute). The path is in the undergrowth almost all the time. Cross a large pasture. Continue following the yellow markings.

At the bridge over the Buizin, do not cross. Take the path that goes to the right. Continue up to a fork. Turn left to cross the watchtower river. Continue to climb up to the vats.

At the hut level, a staircase goes up to the right in the woods (be careful, very steep, can slip). Continue up the river (scrap metal pontoon) and yellow markings, to the foot of the waterfall. Warning: passage requiring attention. Be careful during periods of high water.

Turn back by the river. At the level of the stairs, leave them to continue straight. Back at the bridge over the Buizin, cross. Take the road to the left and drive along for about 700 meters to arrive at the "Laboratory" (abandoned house). Take a path that goes up behind the building (a few steps) to overlook Vaux Fevroux then go down to the hamlet.

Walk along the main street of Vaux-Févroux until you turn right onto rue du lavoir. Continue to the left then go straight up to the Nièvre chapel. Go down the stairs under the cemetery to pass in front of the oratory. Cross the village by the quays of Buizin and route de la gare.

Environments

Village of Vaux en Bugey

A former fortified medieval town, Vaux en Bugey is a pretty bug village. Stone residences, peacefully flowing Buizin, church surrounded by the old walkway and remains of mills bear witness to a past rich in activities and stories
The town was Dauphinois, Savoyard then French in 1601.
The village has partly kept the memory of its oval shape, a legacy of its medieval past.
The walk, from its alleys to the heights, or on the hamlets, is very pleasant in all seasons. The many views of the town, the vineyards or the meadows make it a peaceful and rejuvenating place.

From its past the village also retains a beautiful chapel: Notre Dame de Nièvre, which was once a very popular place of pilgrimage.
The rural and peasant population practiced polyculture: animal husbandry, cereal and market gardening, viticulture and forestry.
The basement was also exploited: first iron ore from 1824 to 1865, then gas from 1906 to 1961. Vaux en Bugey was also the first natural gas deposit exploited in France.

The Buizin Cellar

The Cave du Buizin was born from a simple idea: to compose a varied and atypical wine estate by bringing together plots of quality vines. And from these original grapes, to offer you unique wines, respectful of Man and nature.
On Vaux-en-Bugey, the stronghold of Maud and Sébastien, the vines are steep, cannot be mechanized, and planted with dozens of different grape varieties, white and red mixed. They are sometimes framed by vegetable gardens in espaliers or decorated with sheds of vines called "grangeons". As often in the past, the vines are accompanied by peach trees, gooseberries and fig trees. The flowers and grasses scatter freely between the rows. Maud and Sébastien will passionately share their knowledge, learned from their training with the elders.

Cellar Tissot Thierry

The Tissot cellar is located in the heart of a charming village of medieval origin. Nestled between steep, sunny hillsides, and crossed by a stream, the Buizin, this village offers its winding streets and cut stones to curious walkers.
The hillsides of Ain offer a magnificent wine-growing region clinging to the last foothills of the Jura massif, before it is stopped by the Rhône.
The Tissot vines offer a beautiful mosaic of terroirs: Jacquère is planted on limestone scree, and despite its 100 years of age, it displays resplendent health. L'Altesse is planted on a superb blue marl hillside, very steep and facing south. Gamay draws its fruity and spicy character from the very stony clay-limestone soil where it is planted. La Mondeuse flourishes in the steep and very sunny hillside of Mataret.

The estate is family-run (5th generation working the vines) and on a human scale. The winegrowers work 5 ha and produce 10 different vintages. After spending many years working with respect for nature and without herbicides, the family converted to organic farming in 2016, with AB certification obtained from the 2019 vintage on the entire estate. There is a lot of manual labor on the steep hillsides, including disbudding, lifting, picking, and of course the harvest.

The Tissot family takes great care to produce quality grapes so that vinification takes place in the best conditions, and that the wine expresses all the complexity and power of the Bugey terroirs.

All production is sold in bottles and as much as possible in short circuits: at the estate, in producers' stores, at wine fairs, at wine merchants and restaurateurs, as well as for export (to the United States, Belgium and the Netherlands and Japan). These wines are not found in supermarkets, it is a choice on the part of the Tissot family.

The vintages are regularly selected in the Hachette Wine Guide (1 star for the Mondeuse 2021, "Par les Soirs bleus d'été" in the 2024 edition) or participate in competitions: the Altesse 2022 was rewarded with a medal gold at the 2023 “Amphore” international organic wine competition, the Roussette du Bugey Mataret 2020 received the gold medal in the 2023 “Elle à table” competition. They were also honored by journalists (Bugey Brut in the March 2022 Elle à Table issue).

The Tissot family welcomes you with pleasure (by appointment), to help you discover their vintages!
