The squirrel trail in Leyment

Description

The squirrel invites you into its woods! We discover the various trees that make up his house and those of his neighbors. Family games help to perfect his botanical knowledge. Here and there we also discover a bit of local history, in the shade!

This trail is cool, shaded and without difficulty.
Ideal for taking a few steps in an enchanted and wonderful wood where you can guess some well-hidden fairies and elves!
Playful and interesting, this squirrel path is ideal for taking a break in the heart of nature, a stone's throw from the village.

The squirrel trail parking lot with the trail map is located at Place du 1er mai. You will have to cross the road to find the entrance to the trail. All you have to do is follow the wooden panels engraved with a squirrel design.

Squirrel trail parking lot

The trail car park is located on the edge of rue de la Vallière on the Place du 1er mai, approximately 100m from the entrance/exit sign for the village of Leyment.

The trailhead is on the other side of the road. Caution is advised when crossing this busy road.

A trail route sign is available in the parking lot.

The burnt oak

In the past, shepherds lit a campfire near this oak when they came to graze the animals. They had gotten into the habit of pushing the ashes near the trunk to find it the next time. Little by little, the still hot embers burned the tree in its heart, without it ever perishing. In 1950 a child could pass through the hollow left in the trunk by the fire. In 1970 you already had to bend down and today only a squirrel can squeeze into the hole!

The last beech of the Leyment woods

Leyment wood was previously populated with large beech trees.
Unfortunately, the cutting of logging took over this network and only the last of its kind remains on the side of the path.

Sévrieux Fountain

Today the spring no longer gives water and you will only see a door among the vegetation. In the past, the fountain was used to water the flocks of the shepherds of Leyment. But a dark story of the sale of the source by a notable caused the fountain to pass first into the hands of the town of Lagnieu then into the possession of the village of Ste-Julie, several kilometers away!

Shorter variant

It is possible to return to the car park via the path straight ahead at the intersection.
The path remains in the woods but shortens the walk by around 15 minutes.
Point of interest on the route: the last beech of the Leyment woods.
