Church of Saint-Jean de Niost

The Saint-Jean Baptiste church was rebuilt in 1854 after the destruction of 1794. There remains the Romanesque chevet and a remarkable font or baptismal font visible at the entrance which could date from the origins of religious establishment in the XNUMXth century.

Saint Jean de Niost probably owes its origin to a priory established in the hamlet of Niost by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Île Barbe, where a promontory overlooked an abandoned meander of the river which abutted towards the current school group, not far from the church. The Rollion stream, which is a resurgence on the side of the hill of Monétroi to the north-east, and which today loses itself in the land behind the school group, threw itself into the river here.

Emperor Conrad the Pacific mentions this settlement of Niost in a charter of 970.

In the XNUMXth century, Gourdans, a village in the parish of Saint Jean de Niost, was a fortified place, erected on a spur overlooking the Ain.
