The museum was created in 1958 by the Société d'archéologie de Briord from the material discovered in the caves of Souhait in Montagnieu, the Côte du Mopard in Glandieu and the Balme in Roland in Lompnaz and objects from the necropolis des Plantées in Briord.
As a site museum, its collections are also enriched by deposits of archaeological material discovered by researchers or individuals.
