What to do near Pérouges? Go visit and walk around Saint Vulbas. Charming village on the banks of the Rhône, everything is there for relaxation.

St Vulbas, discreet village in edge of the Rhone has more than one charm up its sleeve. All the more surprising that the town is home to a power station. 10 minutes from the medieval town of Pérouges, it is the perfect spot for a stroll along the water. Under the arboretum shaded, it is cool. On the old towpath, the evenings are mild. On the health trails and picnic areas, relaxation is at the rendezvous. During the sensory visit, historical anecdotes reinforce the feeling of well-being that reigns in this village.

The arboretum: a stroll along the stream

The trail begins with a romantic ruined cottage, covered with ivy. At his feet, a basin where colorful carp swim peacefully. After that, just follow the serpentine of the stream. Along the trees, the pleasant lapping of the water adds to the coolness. The botanical trail takes us from tree to bush, from flowering foliage. In a delightful park, the statue of Philibert le Beau tells us about his tragic end. A walk that ends in style, on the old towpath along the Rhone.

The towpath: the Rhône as a road

Today simple river bank to enjoy the fresh smell of water. Yesterday again, quite a story. For long centuries, the banks were teeming with towing work by the inhabitants of St-Vulbas. The stones from the Villebois quarry were making their way gently towards Lyon, drawn on barges from the shore. When it wasn't the barrels of Bugey wine for the restaurants of Lyon! The trail ferry carried out its incessant back and forth on the water, with the strength of the arms.

This human and technical history can be read in dotted lines, on signs, while strolling. At the leisurely pace of a walker, with an agile pedal stroke, at the slender pace of a scooter... In all seasons, the bank leads straight to the Chapel of Marcilleux. The pretty old lady of the 12th century discusses here with her very young neighbor the power station. Almost 10 centuries of history, science and technology mirror each other...

La guided tour of St-Vulbas takes you from one place to another, with your most beautiful sensations as stops. At the arboretum, the essences of trees and flowers become perfume during an olfactory workshop. In the undergrowth, the curious will have their eyes on the alert, their nose on an insect thanks to a botanist's magnifying glass. On the towpath, walking in silence will delight the ears. Facing the Rhône, emotion surfaces when the poetic haiku is written. Ready to experience St-Vulbas by detours?
