Looking for an easy walk near Lyon? The "over the water" trail in Chaley is the perfect outing with family or friends.
The “Along the water” trail from the Albarine river to Chaley, it is the magical and easy walk in all seasons. So when the friends in town asked me where to walk not far from Lyon, my heart just skipped a beat. The travel advisor of Perouges Bugey Tourism in me said to himself: “To escape and get some fresh air without difficulty, head for Chaley! ".
Distance: 3.5km / Duration: 1h30 / Difficulty: very easy / Departure: Chaley lake / Parking: before the municipal campsite
So I tested the "Along the water" circuit in January with friends to get oxygen. We even had the chance to have pretty snowflakes! While my colleague Kitty walked through it in the summer with darling and a little dog, in search of freshness. Two visits, two seasons: the same pleasure for the eyes and the senses! The proof in pictures: winter/summer, this trail can be enjoyed all year round.
Winter magic or summer freshness
From the starting point at the lake of Chaley, the place exudes tranquility. Fishermen cast their rods in the sun or in the snow, they don't care. The mountain that surrounds us forms a splendid setting for the green river of Albarine.
Past the old lock, here we are on the trail. Here, the trees wear socks in all seasons. That's what my friend calls it green moss which flourishes on the trunks. A color that echoes emerald waters flowing at our feet. The whole landscape inspires fairy tale atmosphere.
Panels explain the phenomenon of resurgences. The water from the plateau passes through the rocks of the limestone cliff and suddenly emerges from under the mountain. Impressive ! And its journey gives the water an exceptional quality. The Albarine is also famous for its clear waters. Only the refreshing bubbling of the water on the pebbles disturbs the calm of the place.
Walking in the cool of the forest in the summer or on the soft carpet of winter leaves is soothing. And we cross on the way vestiges of an ancient heritage. We could easily imagine a few trolls or elves under this old paddle wheel, wouldn't we? The old Charabotte mill was once a restaurant. Today it delights walkers with its mere presence above the undulations of the river.
Along the Albarine: from river to waterfall
The more adventurous will try to go up the side path (starting behind the picnic table), in the direction of the Charabotte waterfall. At this place the landscapes of the river are enchanting. Mineral and vegetable intermingle to form a real picture. And for a moment, it's easy to imagine yourself in the heart of the mountains of Japan...
However, the markup is non-existent and the path maintained only by the passage of walkers. Caution so you don't get lost or slip.
The continuation of the path brings us back to the other bank of the river, passing by the charming hamlet of Charabotte. Families will probably prefer to return by the path taken, part of the return walk being on the road.
