From Perouges to Bugey

Canyoning sites of the Ain

The descent of canyons consists in crossing a multitude of natural obstacles (gorges, faults) often dug by rivers, by using the techniques of progression used in the sports of mountain or caving.

Walking, jumping in basins, sliding down slides, de-climbing or abseiling, swimming in white water... all of this obviously requires specific equipment (dry suit, ropes, harness, helmets...) as well than a mastery of progression techniques.
It was at the beginning of the last century that the exploration of the canyons began. Long before, some reckless fishermen had risked a step or two in some narrow gorges in search of exceptional catches. Canyons and caverns have always been linked to a mythology shaped by men in front of these secret, deep, magical and mysterious places...
In 1905, the first complete descent of the grand canyon of the Verdon was carried out by the team of Edouard Alfred Martel (father of caving), with heavy equipment, boats, ladders... It will then be necessary to wait for the 1980s to see to develop this activity, phenomenon helped by the evolution of the material and the techniques of progression. The fact remains that this activity requires essential know-how to guarantee maximum safety in the face of a naturally hostile environment. In the Ain, clubs and professionals offer outings and discovery courses on the many sites of the Ain mountain.
