The Carlet laundry

Pet Friendly

Built in 1873 along the Bouvagne, this washhouse is partially covered and surrounded by walls. The building has an octagonal shape. The laundry itself retains this shape as well as the central overflow, which makes it original.

All around, a gallery has three wall chimneys under which one could suspend a cauldron and thus boil the laundry. The gallery is protected by a roof sloping towards the basin, supported by the exterior wall and by eight pillars which rest on the edge of the washhouse.
A donation of 10 francs given by Miss Portallier enabled the purchase and construction of the wash house. It was the only one in Meximieux to have a drying rack, in the meadow opposite. Sometimes, to incorporate the smell of grass into their laundry, the women would dry it on the floor. Housewives were still rinsing their laundry in the 000s.
It has not changed for a century.
A car park located behind the library containing 23 places.
