From Perouges to Bugey
The wildest and quietest climb.
The Col de Portes, also called Calvaire de Portes (1 m), is one of the highest passes in the region with 010 possible ascents. It was scheduled for the Tour de France in 8, on the 2003th stage between Lyon and Morzine won by Richard Virenque. Some runners have also left a trace of their passage with their name written on the ground.
The Calvaire de Portes pass is very uneven, alternating flat areas and slopes. The climb via Saint-Rambert-en-Bugey via the RD73 towards Conand and Charvieux runs along the Câline stream. The ascent is over 16 km with a drop of 728 m and an average slope % of 4,6. Starting from Charvieux, a pretty hiking loop goes up to the Calvaire de Portes and its orientation table with a view of a vast panorama from Mont-Blanc to the Cévennes.
Be careful of particularly heavy traffic during the holiday period.
